Why a scholarship fund?
The visit to India in July 2014 was a real inspiration to our students in so many ways. One of the things they could best identify with was the importance, in the lives of some of the Bethel and Joy children, of going on to Higher Education.
Higher Education gives them the opportunity to build a career, rather than just have a job, just as it does for our students. It is the key to social mobility in a society where your background drastically restricts your future. It empowers the children to make real and lasting changes in their own lives, the lives of their families, and their local communities.
As you can imagine, finance is a real barrier to the Bethel and Joy children being able to gain that education. But this is something we feel the Poynton High School community can take action on and make a long term commitment to supporting.
Having talked to Mr Waugh (the Head Teacher) and Mrs Holyland (Deputy Head) we have the backing of the whole school in starting the PHS India Project Scholarship Fund in partnership with India Direct.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
How much will it cost?
It costs around £1000 a year to complete a full degree course (£3000 for 3 years), or about £300 a year to complete a vocational course, like nursing or catering. We want to offer either one place on a degree course, or three places on vocational courses per year (depending on the needs of the children). This would require an ongoing commitment of over £3000 per year, once we get into the third year of funding.
It will be a real challenge, and a long term commitment for the whole school. We have only ever helped purchase one-off items in the past. However, our students have a lot of energy, drive and imagination. They are never short of ideas when it comes to fundraising!
We’re looking forward to working hard, making a difference directly with every penny.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]
Surya’s Story
Surya was previously sponsored by India Direct in one of our children’s homes. She was then supported by India Direct and by LCCT trustees (our Indian partners) in her BSc in Physics. She graduated in 2011.
Previously India Direct has been unable to support higher education entirely, due to the high cost, though we have helped support some very good students like Surya. We are hoping that with the PHS India Project we will be able to support many more like her![/vc_column_text][vc_button2 title=”< Back to Scholarship Fund” style=”rounded” color=”green” size=”md” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Findiadirect.org.uk%2Fscholarship%2F|title:PHS%20Scholarship%20Fund|”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” image=”354″ alignment=”center” img_size=”300×300″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
